Post Grid Random Order (Custom query)

Can’t get the post grid to return items in random order. Out of 12 portfolio posts, the same 3 portfolio posts keep coming out in the same order every time.

Also tried pulling out portfolio items with a custom query: post_type=portfolio
This shows no posts?

Give this a try as a custom query:

post_type=portfolio_item&orderby=rand

Ah portfolio_item…

So that works for the custom query, but not for ordering by random order.

Sorry, I’m not sure on that one. There has to be something else somewhere on the page messing with it. I just tested on my end and all works. I can do it both ways, and all works on my end.

Try isolating your post grid in a page by itself, maybe, to test and see if it’s working?

Slightly off topic but, how do I access the portfolio categories and tags with the custom query?

Have tried these variations without luck:

[post_grid query=”post_type=portfolio_item&portfolio_item_category=commercial”]

[post_grid query=”post_type=portfolio_item&category=commercial”]

[post_grid query=”post_type=portfolio_item&tag=commercial”]

[post_grid query=”post_type=portfolio_item&cat=5″]

[post_grid query=”post_type=portfolio_item&tag_id=1″]

Ah, I got this to work:

query=”post_type=portfolio_item&portfolio_tag=commercial”

How about the portfolio categories?

For Portfolios plugin, your registered post type is:

portfolio_item

And your two registered taxonomies are:

portfolio
portfolio_tag

And WordPress allows you to format a query text string in this format:

post_type={post_type}&{taxonomy}={term}

So, for example:

post_type=book&author=jim
