Failures when trying to import demo content

    When I try to upload demo content, I just get a bunch of failures

    Failed to import pa_color Blue
    Failed to import product_type external
    Failed to import pa_color Green
    Failed to import pa_color Grey
    Failed to import product_type grouped
    Failed to import pa_size Large
    Failed to import pa_size Medium

    ….and so on for about 60 lines. Can you help?

    Hi,

    I believe those specific lines just mean that you don’t have WooCommerce installed (which the demo does). But those errors shouldn’t effect the rest of the import, other than just not importing WooCommerce-related content. So whether that’s important to you is up to you. If you’re not setting up a WooCommerce shop, you can just allow all that to be skipped (which is what the errors mean), and let the import continue to the end.

    So with those errors are you still letting it get to the end of the import process? What is the end result of the import? Are you seeing the message at the end telling you it’s finished? What does your site look like after finishing?

    It was just a hundred lines of failures…then nothing at the bottom.

    I think I got it though…I imported without attachments and that seemed to do the trick…enough of what I needed anyway.

    I’m glad you got it figured out. For future reference, I just wanted to give you some info on all this. —

    The errors you were seeing aren’t actually relevant to what the actual problem was. All the “Failed to import…” messages are just referencing importing things that correspond to plugins you don’t have installed. In your case, it was probably just a bunch of irrelevant stuff from bbPress and WooCommerce not being installed.

    It’s important to understand that these are messages WordPress is outputting in the import process, and NOT PHP errors from your server.

    When trying to import the entire file with all those attachments, your server has to do a lot of work and it can take up to 5-15 minutes in some cases, because it’s actually going one-by-one and downloading each image from an external website.

    So, in the future, just in general when importing a large XML with a lot of attachments, no matter what theme you’re using:

    1. Make sure you allow the process to finish, no matter how long it seems to be taking. In your web browser if you see the loading icon in your browser tab or URL bar still spinning, it’s still going.

    2. If it does get to the point where your web browser has stopped loading anything, and there’s no more loading icon spinning, and you never saw a success message, it probably means there was a PHP error you’re not seeing. Often this is a simple server memory error – which can be easily fixed.

    BUT, you want to make sure your site is setup to actually display server errors. In WordPress you can easily do this by turning on WP_DEBUG in your site’s wp-config.php.

    I’ve tried several times to import this…it appears the file is malformed or something. I get these errors…media works, but nothing else does.

    In fact, the last import also broke WooCommerce and now it throws this error

    I’m fairly certain that the import problems and the WooCommerce error are unrelated. I’ve got an update in the ThemeForest queue that fixes the WooCommerce error you’ve cited. It’ll go live as soon as a Envato reviewer gets to it. Apologies for that; it looks like it happened in a somewhat recent WooCommerce update.

    Looking at your errors, they all seem to be related to the fact that you don’t have bbPress installed. As I explained to the previous customer, those errors you’re pasting don’t actually mean anything really all that relevant, other than WordPress is skipping data related to bbPress forums. So, those errors don’t tell us anything about why no other data like posts, pages, etc, isn’t getting imported.

    A very common issue people run into is a simple memory exhaustion error from being such a massive import. If you turn on WP_DEBUG it will display relevant PHP errors. If it’s a memory error, you know you can simply increase your memory.

    Or, another common issue is that people don’t realize how long it can actually take to do the full import. They see the irrelevant errors, think something is wrong but don’t understand that the browser is still loading and loading, continuing to run the import.
