Hello,
Have you set this page as your “posts page” at Settings > Reading > Frontpage displays?
yes and I have a blog post written and it’s shows up on the blog page, just my custom widget doesn’t
When you set a posts page, WordPress then takes over this page. There are two approaches you could take here.
Option 1:
1. Leave the “posts page” option blank at Settings > Reading.
2. Apply the Post List page template to the blog page.
3. Assign the widget area to the blog page as you’re doing.
Option 2:
1. Select the blog page as your “posts page” option at Settings > Reading.
2. The page template you select on the page now becomes irrelevant.
3. As WordPress sees it, this is now your “homepage” and the is_home condition is now true — Under the widget area assignment, select Hierarchy > Homepage for the assignment.
Awesome option 1 worked perfectly, are there any draw backs to do it this way?
I am not aware of any drawbacks to doing it this way.
great thanks for such speedy responses
Ok so I noticed that the correct side bar shows up on the blog page but if you click into the article the custom sidebar isn’t there and it defaults back to the main rightside bar
look here and click the read more button and you will see the sidebar change
This is what we’d expect because you only applied the sidebar to the blog page, right? The blog page lists out posts, but itself, is not associated with these individual posts.
So, now you need to apply the sidebar to the posts, if that’s what you want. One way you could do this is by adding the assignment Hierarchy > All Posts.
Ahh right I do recall reading that thanks again!
I forgot to mention — If you start using “posts” on your site for things other than this blog, the “Posts in Category” section of widget area assignments can come in handy, too.
