Conflict with no active plugins

    Hi,

I’ve noticed that with Barely Corporate as the active theme when I try to do certain things like click on Dashboard > Updates or install a plugin, it tries for a few minutes and then gives up. No error is displayed, it just reverts to the previous page. The obvious thought is that there is a conflict with a plugin but I deactivated all plugins but same thing happens. However if I revert to the default theme it works correctly.

Any idea what could be causing the problem? Maybe something left behind even when the plugins are deactivated? I think this has only just started happening as I haven’t noticed it before and I only discovered it because there was a conflict with the new Theme Blvd Layout Builder 2.0.7 update and I had to revert to 2.0.6 to resolve.

    Thanks.

    Hi,

First off, let me apologize with the issue with the 2.0.7 Layout Builder update. For a few hours this bug existed, and was fixed as soon as I found out about it. Luckily, it only looks like a handful of people made that update over the holiday for that short period when that issue existed. So, if you update now to 2.0.7 again, things should work for you.

From what you’re describing, it’s difficult to tell where exactly your issue is. —

First, to rule out any client-side javascript conflicts, it’s really important that when you’re doing this testing and deactivating plugins, that you fully clear your web browser cache. Without doing this, you’re not getting an accurate test.

Now, because what you’re describing is over on the plugin update page (where the theme doesn’t apply any javascript), and the WordPress javascript is also using AJAX to do server-side things, it sounds like maybe your issue is something server-related.

First, do you have WP_DEBUG enabled, so you can have error reporting show?

This is just a wild guess, but I have a feeling your issue has something to do with memory consumption. Assuming you’re using the latest version of WordPress and all, that would account for a major difference between using Barely Corporate and going back to a default WP theme doesn’t doesn’t offer much functionality. With WP_DEBUG on, hopefully we can get an error to print out that confirms this or gives us some sort of message to lead us.

Thanks for your reply. I had this issue on 2 servers – the site was hosted on a shared host but I copied it over to a test site my own VPS yesterday as I suspected the issues were server related but got exactly the same results. I have enabled WP_DEBUG but am not getting any errors and nothing in the error_log. I did clear the cache after disabling all plugins and am still getting the same issues.

I’m happy to give you access to the test site if you want to have a look (but you’ll have to change the IP address in your Hosts file to access it).

    Thanks.

I haven’t anyone else reporting what you are. So yes, please send me a login to your WP admin where I can see the issues, and I’ll check it out, and see if I can think of anything. Can you make sure WP_DEBUG is on in the site you send me?

And what issues am I specifically looking for? You were a little vague earlier. You can’t install any plugin from wordpress.org through your wp admin, or update them? Any other specific examples of issues I can look for?

I’m wondering if this is the answer to your problem, as well:

… Two people in the same day, both getting time out issues related to updates, make me think they may be related. Try the fix I explained there, and see if it works for you — just put that code at the bottom of your child theme’s functions.php.

Thanks, have just added the code to functions.php and it does appear to have resolved the issue. However as this is disabling updates can you please post here when the Envato issue has been resolved so that we can re-enable updates?

    Many thanks.
