    I want to design a site than can get wider than the standard JumpStart theme and would like to know what size the elements in my grid should be. I assume I should have 12 columns. Are the gutters a fixed width or a percentage? I assume that the column widths are a percentage.

    Hello,

    Sure, you’d just change the width of the outer container, and everything will fall into place.

    #container {
    	max-width: 1200px;
    }

    The grid system used comes from Bootstrap if you want to read more about how it works:

    http://getbootstrap.com/css/#grid

    Basically, all columns are percentages, and gutters are a fixed pixel amount, but since they’re applied with padding, they don’t actually effect the percentage widths of the columns.

    I’M USING THE
    stretch child theme and when i add that line to the child theme the site starts left aligning and doesn’t get any wider.

    am i supposed to edit the parent theme?

    This child theme had a whole other structure. Checkout its style.css — can you see towards the top what would be setting the width of this child theme?
