Altering the Comments

    Can you point me in the right direction to allow me to alter the design of the comments, such as alternating background colors or making commenters’ name stand out more and so on..?

    Basically, I want to have something with a little more eye candy to it than at present.

    These will just be CSS customizations you’d make to the theme. We use the default WordPress functionality for listing out comments. So the HTML markup is the same unified markup all other themes should be outputting. This should give you many options for styling that the theme isn’t even tapping into like —

    #comments li.comment.even {  ... }
    #comments li.comment.odd {  ... }

    For CSS changes, it’s a good idea to use a tool like firebug or Google Chrome’s built-in developer tools to locate them and then put the edits either in your child theme or in the “Custom CSS” option on your theme options page.

    Also, here’s a helpful tutorial on how to use Firebug – The only thing I’d suggest not doing is actually making edits to the theme’s CSS files, as it shows at the end of that video. However, the video serves as a good introduction to Firebug and how it can be used to find what CSS is effecting certain areas of your site without ever digging around in any files.
