    Hi Jason,

    Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. Sometimes life interferes with living; sigh.

    Right you are. I was not dropping the widget into the Custom Blog Sidebar. Operator error. My “synaptic firing rate” is just not as swift as it used to be.

    Thanks for getting me back on track.

    Back again. I just discovered I can’t insert a widget into the right sidebar on posts. My default setting is sidebars left and right with one column.

    I can insert widgets left and right sidebars on pages, but only in the left sidebar on posts. The right sidebar continues to show the yellow box and message “This is a fixed sidebar with ID, custom-blog-sidebar, but you haven’t put any widgets in it yet.”

    Is there a setting I may have clicked that turned off widgets in the right sidebar of posts?

    RESOLVED! I found the answer in another post. Those messages don’t show up unless I’m logged in.

    Man, I wish the “Edit” function on the forum would stay on. It would save time for both of us; I could just delete this darn thing.

    Never mind. I just figured it out. I just deleted the URL in the button. Duh.
    Thanks

    Jason – You were RIGHT!

    While rebuilding my site I was adding plug-ins and discovered that when I activated

    Scripts Gzip

    the bars disappeared again. Deactivate it; the bars are back. The plug-in description says it “Merges CSS and/or JS scripts on all pages into one call and sends them gzipped.”

    I’m glad to have the problem solved, but I hate to give up the benefit of that plug-in. I’ve tested it and it really speeds up page loading. Is there another plug-in/program you would recommend to replace it?

    You may indeed be right Jason; but after due consideration I decided to build the new design from scratch anyway. I’ll sleep better at night knowing that I won’t step on any landmines possibly hidden in my old backup.

    I’ve been using basically the same software and plugins for the last three years and have never had that problem before. I’ll leave it in the Twilight Zone.

    Thanks again. Your willingness to help is always very much appreciated.

    All the best to you,
    Frank

    Jason, after numerous re-installs I have not been able to solve the mystery of the missing bars. No matter what I try as soon as I run a FTP update the bars disappear. Many people have updated successfully, so I think the problem must be in my backup, not in Alyeska.

    I’m redesigning my site anyway, so rather than take the risk that I’m forwarding errors from a corrupt backup, I’ll just do a clean install and go from there.

    Thanks for setting me straight about the font. As always, I’m grateful for your support and I’m still in love with Alyeska.

    Ok, you were right about the font. When I logged out and cleared my cache the font displayed correctly. Thanks. (Seems like I should remember that by now, huh?)

    However, the problem with the missing bars on the mobile menu is still there.

    Below is a link to a screen capture taken when I tested it at “Keynote Device Anywhere.” This is online testing on real smartphones, not an emulator. It seems that the strange numbers inside the square only show up on an emulator. With real devices the square is empty; as you will see. l was logged out and my cache was cleared. Of course this should not have an effect anyway as the test was conducted on their device, not mine or my desktop. Just for fun I tested it on iPhone 4 and 5 also. Same result.

    I’m going to just go ahead and load my backup and try it again. I’ll check it before I change the font size just to see if that’s where the problem is. Hey, glitches happen. I’ll let you know the result.

    Here you go: http://booksstarringme.com/ The site is being redone, so there’s almost nothing there.

    I just noticed that my change to the top menu font was rejected. The code is still in the Custom CSS box but the font has returned to the original size. Looks like I did it wrong. Here is the code I entered:

    #main-menu .sf-menu li a {
    font-family: “Verdana”, “Arial”, “Helvetica”,font-weight:bold;
    font-size: 16px;
    }

    Actually that’s horizontal bars. It’s been a long night.

    Got it!

    I was confused about the difference between alt text – shows if someone has turned off images in their browser – and the title of the image.

    With your info I did some Googling and got it straight. I have not been adding titles to my images. That’s what pops up when you hover over the image. Duh.

    Thanks for your patience with me, Jason. If I live long enough I’ll get it all down one of these days.

    P.S. I’m still in love with Alyeska. Nothing beats it.

    Sorry Jason.

    Perhaps I’m not using the right terms. Here is an example from your Alyeska demo.

    http://sowthegift.com/example.gif

    I’m giving my site a complete rebuild. That’s how I noticed that no “popup” image alt info is working. I thought you called that a “tooltip.”

    I have the site closed while I’m working on it, so all you’ll see is a under construction notice. But, if you want to check it out I can email you a link with admin access. Just let me know.
