Just been told that someone trying to comment on a post and they got a 404 error page not found.
http://www.keithmcmean.co.uk/everything-has-a-shelf-life/ this was the post they tried to comment on. I disabled all the plugin’s and tried from a different browser but I still got the error message?

    Any ideas why?

    Thanks
    Keith

    Hello,

The theme honestly doesn’t do anything except include WP’s internal function for displaying the comment form, comment_form. So I’m not quite sure how it could have anything to do with any 404’s in that regard. To be honest, I’ve never heard of such an issue, so I don’t really have any general troubleshooting tips for it, unfortunately that I can think of.

However, when I look at your site, (1) I see that you have closed your comments and (2) it appears that you’re using a 3rd-party plugin to replace the theme’s comments template. — Looks like possibly this one from a Google search: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/spam-free-wordpress/

Yeah I did close the comments. I disabled all the plugins and tried adding comments one by one as I enabled the plugins, no luck. I have tracked it down to the database so until I get time to have a good look I have closed the comments, its easier than being told it doesn’t work.
Again I don’t think its the theme I think its the database, I just wanted to narrow it down in case you had come across this problem before?

    Thanks
    Keith

Can I see what happens when you open the comments and disable the plugin?

It looks like something is off with how the URL to the site is setup. For some reason WP is trying to post the comment form to:

    %5ehttp:/69.178.82.238/

… Possibly this is something that looks familiar to you? Maybe a place to start.

Yeah I looked at that and WordPress seemed to think it was to do with the site names being different, I have a screenshot but I can’t send it to you, but they are the same, so not sure why it should reference the %5ehttp:/69.178.82.238/ address ?

Found out what it was…a stray bit of code in the htaccess file, would you believe it?

    Thanks
