    The menu bar is empty

Go to Appearance > Menus, create a menu, and apply it to the Primary Navigation location. Here’s a video that will walk you through this: http://www.jasonbobich.com/wordpress/wordpress-3-menus/

This is actually is not the case. This doesn’t have anything to do with your menu. Go to Appearance > Widgets, and just remove the widgets that are placed in the “Ads Above Header” widget area.

    Thanks a lot,
Both tips above where very useful and easily applied.
I just have a small comment, going through the video i noticed that the “Screen Option” drop down includes a number of possibilities i don’t have; Post Tags, Slideshows, Portfolios, Portfolio Tags.
Any idea on how to get there?

That’s just going to show any kind of custom post types or taxonomies your current theme and plugins have setup. In the case of this theme, those things don’t exist. You should have Post Tags, but not Portfolios, Slideshows, Slides, or Portfolio Tags — Those were things that were specific to whatever theme I was using in the video. It’s a very old video.
