Layouts vs Templates

Apologies upfront for my cluelessness… still coming to grips with WordPress terminology and application after years of static HTML and CSS thinking.
I have a number of pages that I’d like to share a common appearance (for example: top slider, slogan, 4 columns below). If I use the layout builder to create a new layout (e.g., “Products”) it looks like I have to also populate that layout with unique content. If so, does this mean that I’d need to create 4 different layouts (Product-1, Product-2, etc.) for 4 different product pages or can I apply one “unpopulated” layout to several pre-existing pages that already have content and retain that content on those pages?
Can the content of the pages that have custom layouts applied be edited from within the page or do I have to go back to its layout and edit its content there?
I guess what I’m looking for is the equivalent of a Dreamweaver template but the only Jump Start template that seems appropriate is “Custom”…. which gets me back to the layout issues.
I hoped that I’ve explained my problem clearly enough and that you’ll be able to help.
