    Jason,

It has been awhile since I configured my site, and I recently realized that my header is disappearing when a blog post is selected and displayed. I have been playing with template content and configuration settings to get this to appear but cannot seem to get it right. I have templates built for my home page, for my primary blog page and for individual blog pages.

Here is the home page: http://www.davidaryan.com/
Here is the blog home: http://www.davidaryan.com/blog/
And here is a post: http://www.davidaryan.com/writing/agent-for-a-day/

    Hi,

So how were you accomplishing this before? Were you using the Theme Blvd Layouts to Posts plugin to apply some custom layout manually to all posts on your site?

If you’re trying to apply a custom layout to a post, that would be the only way. So, if that’s your method for implementing this banner at the top, you’d need to apply that custom layout to every post you create.

That’s a great question, and I don’t have the answer. I looked at my notes and best I can tell I used the same layout for the primary post page. I built custom layouts in theme builder for the home page, for the blog home, for back pages and for individual posts. But the settings change really only on the sidebars. Frustrating.

Go to your Plugins page in your WordPress admin, and check if you have the plugin Theme Blvd Layouts to Posts. Do you have it activated?

I didn’t have it, but I do now. It is activated. Same issue.

If using a custom template from the layout builder for single posts is the route you want to take here, you need to use this plugin. And so again, with this plugin active, you will need to now apply the custom template you made, for your single posts, to each post on your site. This has always been the case. Nothing new.

Make sense. I do sense your hesitance in recommending this route. You think it better to reverse engineer the issue and go simpler all around? Keep the same header throughout — let’s face it, that’s what 98 percent of sites do, even those that implement blogs within them — and not need the plug in. At that point, single posts get the same treatment as the primary post page. Thanks for your help on this.

Yeah, I guess my hesitance is just because this isn’t what the layout builder is really meant to be used for. It’s more meant to build out the content for that special landing page, like your homepage. It seems like a bit of a pain to be applying these templates throughout your site on every page and post, and it’s also pretty taxing on the load of the site.

I would agree that most websites have a consistent header throughout the site, and that’s what the theme has; you’re just not using it. So I’m not sure if this is a conscious design choice or a misunderstanding of how the theme works, but I guess it seems a little strange to me to go these lengths to more-or-less just move the theme’s default location for what is essentially the “logo” of your site.

Many customers over the years have wanted to use full-width banners like you’re doing instead of a smaller logo, but generally they still utilize the logo option at Appearance > Theme Options > Layout > Header. It will accommodate a larger image like you’re using for your banner.

In your case, it would look like this, which I think looks a bit nicer, and doesn’t involve doing anything custom throughout the site, aside from maybe a custom layout on your homepage that has some extra stuff to it.

The theme provides many ways to accomplish a lot of different things. You could even utilize widget areas above the content at Appearance > Widgets to apply a banner across the site. Anyway, that’s just my two cents. Food for thought. 🙂
