The default WordPress Gallery does not produce a light box effect when displaying the images. How do I make that work.

WordPress by default does not have any kind of lightbox feature. When you insert a gallery and set it to link to the files (opposed to attachment pages), the theme is setup to transform this into linking to the lightbox popups for the images when displayed on the frontend of your website.
However, there is currently a bug in WordPress (since WP 3.5.0) that does allow the gallery to keep its “link” attribute when getting inserted into your page or post. They’ve got this in trac, and it looks live they’ve got it fixed for when ever the next update comes out.
… in the mean time you can just type the
link="file" manually into the gallery shortcode after it’s inserted into your page. I assume this will be fixed when WP 3.5.2 gets released.
