I was wondering how do i add featured image to a custom layout?? Or what is the alternative

There’s not going to be any “featured image” of a custom layout. When you’re building a custom layout you’ve only got the elements there in the Builder to work with.
1) You could insert a content element into your layout, select to input raw content, and then just put an image in with basic HTML:
<img src="http://yoursite.com/uploads/your-image.jpg" class="pretty" />
Note: Adding the class “pretty” will give the image a frame around it in this theme.
2) If you’re not comfortable with this, you can also use the “Content from external page” option when using the Content element of the layout builder. This will allow you create an external page, and place the image into that page with WordPress’s standard page edit tools. Then, you can include that in your content element.
