Featured image small AND full thumbnails on one post list

    Hi, Jason…

    I’ve got a post list for my homepage/primary post content. It shows both featured image as well as excerpts of each post. Here’s my dilemma: most of the posts will require the small thumbnail but every once in a while there will be a situation which calls for a full width featured image.

    Is there any way to show both small featured images as a thumbnail as well as full featured images on the post page?

    Thanks!

    Hello,

    Apologies if I’m not totally understanding what you’re trying to do. — But essentially you’re saying that on some posts, you want to change the thumbnail size used on just the single post page only?

    If that the case then you can do this under your Post Options when editing the specific posts:

    Or is that not what you mean?

    Not quite. I’ve gone through the default configurations and the per post configurations but haven’t been able to accomplish what I want to.

    Here are some examples:
    This uses the ‘Show small thumbnail’

    On the original post the small green block is actually a 590px across.

    This uses ‘Show full-width thumbnail’

    Unfortunately, the small thumbnails are now in a container that stretch all the way across the content area.

    Ultimately, my goal is to have both the small thumbnail and the full width thumbnail exist on the primary post page in harmony 🙂

    The only real difference between the small and full-width thumbnails are the image size and the fact that the small one is floated left. However, floated or not, if an image is large enough, it’s going to take up entire area.

    So, here’s one possible idea: Take the Image Sizes plugin, and just change the small thumbnail size to something very large. Then, set your thumbnail setting to small. When you upload an image, if it’s smaller than the crop size, WP can’t make it. Now, with every image you upload, it will just show in its natural size floated left.

    Thanks for the heads up. I’ve slowly picking through this 🙂

    So, for the ‘Show small thumbnail’ – http://i47.tinypic.com/24o52ip.jpg – I notice that it applies the following class:

    class=”featured-image-wrapper attachment-small wp-post-image thumbnail”

    Which the attachment-small resizes it to the smaller thumbail.

    For my other setting, ‘Show full-width thumbnail’ – http://i48.tinypic.com/rk0769.png – I notice that it applies tb-medium to the featured image:

    class=”featured-image-wrapper attachment-tb_medium wp-post-image thumbnail”

    I wound up dropping a class into the child style.css:
    .attachment-tb_medium {float:left;}

    Everything seems to work as it should, now. The only other instance of tb_medium that I saw in your code was in an array in helpers.php which specified a width of 620.

    Anyhow, I don’t know if this is even making sense. I’m tired and I feel like I’m rambling. In any event, thanks!

    Yeah, simply floating the large thumbnail should work, too. Good idea.
