    Hi Jason B.,

I tried to assign a custom widget area to a blank parent category, but it doesn’t allow me to do so. Is there a way around this? Please advise.

    Thank you in advance.

    Jason W.

No, you’re not able to do this. The reason is because in this instance the theme just calls get_categories with no parameters passed in. By default WordPress has this setup to not return categories that are empty, but this can be changed by passing in the hide_empty argument as false.

Unfortunately there is no filter or anything in the theme that will allow you to change this from your Child theme. You can see where this happens on around line 666 of /framework/admin/functions/display.php.
